Profile of Carol Bartz (CEO AutodesK)

" I think the safest, surest way to the top is to have a strong, broad base of experience. That's why I  use the pyramid metaphor," Bartz says. " Pyramids have a stronger base than a free-standing  ladder. But to get that strong base, you may have to take lateral promotions, or maybe even take a step backward in your career."

" Too many times, somebody in their twenties or thirities will come into my office and want career counseling. I always being the same way. I tell them they have 30 or so more years to work here, and every minute of that 30 years is not going to be spent on an onward and upward track. I want you to get that out of your head right now. With that out of the way, let's see what skills and knowledge you might need based on whatever the heck it is you want to do."

" The other thing I tell them is that you have to have passion, and that passion has to come through. I'll take a smart person with passion over someone with years of experience any day. People with intelligence and passion will get the problem solved, no matter what."

" You have to show by example what is important. I tell my VPs that if their 10 yrs old has a concert, that is going to happen one time and that concert takes precedence over an executive meeting. Again I have to show people what I respect and what I'm interested in. I think that's really important"

" You have to have people excited about what you are doing, because going to work is not just about getting paid."

" What happens when a company's people are excited about what they do? They work harder. They have more fun. And - as the employees at Autodesk are quick to point out -- they deliver.
